Development
Yes, it was a popular script. It’s one of those stories that really grabs you and you fall in love with it. It’s very smart and funny and clever and such a page turner I couldn’t put it down. Every 10 pages, something new happens! At the same time it’s a very intimate movie while taking place on this epic scale. For me, it’s a story about what’s important to live a full life. What are the things we need as humans? It’s not afraid to entertain but at the same time it asks big questions about what does it mean to really feel happy. Every generation has its love story. I feel like this is it. I had to do it.
— Director Morten Tyldum
The original script for Passengers written by Jon Spaihts had been floating around Hollywood for years after it was included in 2007's Black List (Hollywood's annual ranking of the most admired scripts that have yet to be greenlit), and was in development hell ever since. At one point the film was it was a set to star Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon, and was to be produced for the relatively low price of $35 million. Brian Kirk was originally scheduled to make his feature directorial debut with the film with Reeves at the lead On December 5, 2014, it was announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment had won the auction to take the rights to the film.[13] In early 2015, Morten Tyldum was chosen to helm the film.[14] Tyldum had always wanted to do a massive sci-fi action movie but also stressed on the importance of a character driven film rather than a cold and distant sci-fi film.
The cast – Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne and Aurora Perrineau – were announced between February 2015 to January 2016. Lawrence was paid $20 million against 30 percent of the profit after the movie breaks even and Pratt was paid $12 million.
Principal photography
Principal photography on the film began in September 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. Filming occasionally took place for full days with a bulk of the shooting done around the two leads only. Lawrence got herself really drunk for a sex scene – her first ever – which she said was "bizarre" and "awkward" and was followed by anxiety and guilt. She stressed over the fact that Pratt (husband of Anna Faris) was the first married man she has kissed, "It was just very vulnerable. You don't know what's too much. You want to do it real. You want everything to be real. That was the most vulnerable I've ever been."
Music
Thomas Newman will compose the musical score for Passengers. Spaihts said that he wrote Passengers while listening to Newman's previous scores.
